The mice are able to detect infrared light, which is invisible to humans.
In a statement released by MIT, researchers explained how the mice were created.
"We designed synthetic gene networks that produce proteins that interact with light and then injected them into the eyes of blind mice," said study head Michael R. Bruchas, PhD, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and co-senior author of the paper with MIT's Daniel Anderson, PhD, and colleagues there and at Northwestern University.
"When we turn on the light, we can show we've restored very low levels of light sensitivity in these mice."
While this is still not a viable treatment for humans with retinitis pigmentosa or other forms of blindness, it does allow researchers to study the workings of protein interactions in real time within living tissues.
The study has been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
